The LLM-NPC landscape

A systematic map of how large language models are being used to drive non-player characters, and where the gaps are.

Large language models promise characters that converse openly and behave in ways developers did not fully author. The field is moving fast enough that nobody has a unified picture of what has been built, how well it works, or what it costs. We are surveying the research literature to build that picture, and to make visible which properties are routinely claimed but rarely measured.
